Get Started with the Learn to Read Program

The Learn to Read is focused on teaching a reading strategy to primary school students. We encourage family support of the child’s efforts in learning to read by including one or more family members to be present during all remote lessons with a Reading Pal, Reading Coach, or the Supervising Teacher.

Application:
Families may enroll directly on the Learn to Read website or enroll through a partner organization such as a literacy coalition, a community service organization, an after-school program, or a university.

Our focus is to provide a reading curriculum with support to primary school students whose reading skills are “below basic proficiency” or “at basic proficiency” for their current grade level. Admittance to the program covers the cost of:

  • The initial placement and assessment
  • Student workbooks
  • Recorded reading lessons
  • Supervising Teacher
  • Reading Coach Support
  • Reading Pal Support

The Supervising Teacher conduct the initial assessment, set the weekly schedule for lesson engagement,  monitor progress and conduct periodic assessments, generally upon the completion of each workbook.

The Reading Pal will assists the student on each scheduled assignment, working through each of the assignments with the student as per the student’s needs.

The Reading Coach will join a session every one or two weeks to confirm progress, student engagement and the understanding of the reading skills being taught.
